HIP Pain

Hip pain is very common among the older population but can be detrimental to a person’s overall quality of life. Because the hip is so central to so many movements, hip pain can hinder mobility and keep you from doing many of the things you love to do.

Hip pain is generally categorized as acute or chronic. Acute hip pain is short-term pain that is caused by an injury, like a fall or overuse. Chronic hip pain is often caused by natural wear-and-tear on the joint as we age, often in the form of arthritis.

Depending on the root cause, knee pain symptoms can range from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing, or burning sensation.

Just as hip pain can take different forms and cause different sensations, there are a variety of reasons that you could experience hip pain. Two of the most common causes of hip pain are:

  • Tendonitis – This is the inflammation of the tendons that attach the bones to muscles, often caused by overuse or overstretching.
  • Arthritis – This is perhaps the most common cause of hip pain in older adults. Arthritis can cause inflammation and can lead to the breakdown of cartilage in the hip joint.
  • Bursitis – When bursae sacs inside the hip joints become inflamed, it can cause pain and irritation in the joint.

Physical therapy is generally very effective for treating hip pain. Treatments usually are a combination of passive and active modalities.

Passive treatments could include:

  • Heat and ice
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Pain management

Active treatments could include:

  • Stretching exercises
  • Strength training
  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Water therapy

When you meet with a physical therapist, you should expect to be examined and answer some questions about your pain and your goals. This will help your physical therapist create an individualized treatment plan to help you get rid of your pain and get back to doing the things you love to do.
