“By definition, a nonprofit organization is formed for the purpose of serving a public or mutual benefit other than the pursuit of accumulation of profits for owners or investors.” Nonprofit organizations are an important part of society. They have a positive impact on many facets of their communities. You most likely know someone who works with one, be someone who has donated to or volunteered with one, is someone who works for one, or may even be supported through the services of a nonprofit.
Community
Many nonprofits support a need in their community not met through other means whether it be affordable housing, food security, clothing, and more. Nonprofit organizations help strengthen their community. People are able to get involved and make a difference. Nonprofit leaders can be a strong voice for change and lead the way to improvements for the people they serve. Government resources can only go so far and nonprofits with the support of grants and donations are able to alleviate needs.
Economy
Nonprofits also play a role in the economy. “The role of nonprofits in society can have ripple effects throughout the economy. A 2020 report by Johns Hopkins University showed that nonprofits jobs grew 18.6% from 2007 to 2017 — three times that of for-profit employment in the U.S. In 2016, the nonprofit sector provided 5.6% of the nation’s entire GDP — $1.047.2 trillion.”
Think of the local nonprofits in your area. What good have you seen come about because of these organizations? You can see the impact driving through your town, speaking with neighbors, or scrolling social media. Nonprofits will continue to be a necessity for society. What are you doing to help?
