Recovering from Surgery

Some injuries and chronic conditions may require orthopedic surgery, which by its very nature causes trauma to the limb or joint that was operated on.

Physical therapy is almost always prescribed by your physician after surgery to help you regain range of motion and strength.

Your body has a “use it or lose it” attitude when it comes to strength and flexibility, so it’s important to work out the stiffness and inflammation that is caused by surgery quickly and regularly in order to regain your quality of life. Physical therapy will help increase blood flow to the recently repaired body part, which will speed up healing time and get you back to doing the things you love more quickly.

While some orthopedic physicians may offer recommendations for certain physical therapy clinics in your area, you have a right to choose who you see for your post-surgical rehab.

“Prehab” is a physical therapy practice designed to get you as strong and flexible as possible before you undergo surgery. The basic idea is that the stronger you are going in, the easier and faster your recovery will be post-op.

If you are planning on having a surgical procedure done in the near future, you should discuss prehab options with your doctor or PT.
